Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Sustainable Development at HSE
HSE’s Faculty of Law is a partner of the Fulbright Scholar Programme and each year has the opportunity to host a Distinguished Chair in Sustainable Development. David Wirth, a Professor who teaches and supervises research at Boston College Law School, arrived at HSE in this capacity in September 2016. He has shared his research, teaching and collaboration plans for the upcoming academic year at HSE with The HSE Look bulletin.

'At Least One Russian University Should Be in the Top-100 of Each Global Ranking Category'
On October 19, the rectors of 21 top Russian universities met to discuss Russia’s position in international university rankings. These 21 universities are all are members of the Global Universities Association, the main purpose of which is to create a network for and inspire collaboration among schools participating in the widely discussed Project 5-100. Slated to last eight years, this project was established under Russia’s Presidential Decree No. 599, which aims to improve the standing of Russian universities among the world’s top schools and research centres.

Second-year student in the HSE/NES Programme in Economics, Maksim Vavulin, placed second in the FIDE World Youth Under 18 Chess Championship. The championship took place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia from September 21st through October 5th.
Higher Education Conference Set to Feature Wide Variety of Topics
On October 20-22, 2016, the Russian Association of Higher Education Researchers will hold its 7th International Conference in Moscow. This annual event brings together researchers and educators who are interested in higher education development in a forum to discuss challenges and goals facing universities and their stakeholders (students, faculty, administrators, graduates etc.).

Exhibition Dedicated to Osip Mandelstam Opens in Granada
In September 2016, an exhibition entitled ‘Osip Mandelstam: Word and Destiny’ opened in Granada. This event has been organized by HSE Mandelstam Centre, the State Literature Museum, the Mandelstam Society and UNESCO Cities of Literature Heidelberg and Granada.
International Students Can Now Apply to HSE through a Simplified Procedure
HSE’s Admission Rules for the 2017/2018 academic year have undergone some changes in regards to international admission. The admission track is now unified for students from both CIS and non-CIS countries. Thus, only two exams must be passed in order to be accepted into a given undergraduate programme, while competitions for Master’s programmes only require a portfolio and an interview. The rules for International Olympiad Competitions have also been changed. Registration for these competitions ends on November 15.

HSE Design Students Take Part in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for the Second Time
Students from the HSE School of Design specializing in fashion presented their new collection H.A.R.D. 2.0 – a mix of works styled in a single concept. For a year HSE students have been experimenting with forms and techniques, deconstructing and creating new forms from old ones.

MIT Professors Discuss Microbiopolitics Through the Lens of American Cheese
On Monday, October 3, two professors of anthropology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – Heather Paxson and Stefan Helmreich – delivered a seminar for students of HSE St. Petersburg Master's programme in Applied and Interdisciplinary History. A presentation by Professor Paxson focused on how the microbiopolitics of cheese making in the U.S. presupposed and promoted industrial methods and standards and how in recent decades interest in producing and consuming artisanally made, raw-milk cheese has risen dramatically.
