Karin Kneissl: ‘We Need a Conversation’
On 13–14 February, former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl will give a course on the history of the oil market for HSE University students. In mid-December, she talked at HSE University on 'Energy Is the Name of the Game: Geopolitics and Economics of the Energy Markets from 1911 to 2023' and spoke to the HSE News Service. In her interview, she discussed European energy policies, the problems of neutrality, the crisis of trust, and her personal experiences as a public figure in global politics. She also announced her book Requiem for Europe, which is planned to be published with HSE.
Dancing, Quizzes, and a Space Dog: HSE University Celebrates Student Night 2023
This year, HSE University started celebrating Student Day on the evening of January 24, when the traditional Digital Night festival kicked off at Pokrovka. For the first time since 2019, it was held in the pre-pandemic format: the quizzes, board games, lectures, dancing and master classes didn't stop until 6 am.
HSE Art and Design School Announces Competition Results, Explores the Art of Photography, and Opens New Exhibition
The HSE Art and Design School held three important events in the run-up to the New Year’s holidays: announcing the winners of the second season of the international HSE Creative Open competition, hosting the final lecture of the October–December open lecture season, and launching the Diploma22 graduation project exhibition at the HSE Art Gallery.
HSE University and TIIAME Sign Cooperation Agreement
The agreement between HSE University and the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers is aimed at developing academic and cultural cooperation, including student exchange. The agreement was signed on November 25, on the eve of HSE University’s 30th anniversary. On the same day, representatives of universities and diplomatic missions of Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Iran, Egypt, and Bolivia visited the university.

A delegation from the embassy of Armenia has visited HSE University. Vice Rector Victoria Panova and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to the Russian Federation Vagharshak Harutyunyan discussed prospects for cooperation in education and science.
HSE Geography Students Share Impressions of Field Practice in Volga Territories
Second-year students of the HSE Bachelor's Programme 'Geography of Global Changes and Geoinformation Technology' covered 4,000 kilometres in 20 days following a classical meridional route. They travelled to Cherdyn, a city in the north of Perm Krai with only taiga and polar bears beyond it, then continued far south to the Volga Delta. Between these two extreme locations, they studied the central feature of Russia's life and history: the Volga River and its basin.
HSE University to Become Centre of Expertise for LPR Universities
On October 19th, HSE Rector Nikita Anisimov became the first rector to visit the Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), as part of a delegation following the Republic’s accession to Russia. During meetings with acting Head of LPR, Leonid Pasechnik, and the Republic’s Prime Minister, Sergey Kozlov, they signed an agreement between HSE University and LPR Government on strategic cooperation in education and research.
Road of Kindness: More Than 400 People Participate in Charity Run
On September 4th, the Road of Kindness charity run, timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of HSE University, took place in Gorky Park in Moscow. Participants in the event raised more than 220,000 roubles for the Konstantin Khabensky Charity Foundation; these funds will be used to help children and young people with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. A similar event was organised by the HSE campus in Nizhny Novgorod.
Architecture, Tourism, and Metallurgy in the Urals: HSE University Urban and Regional Development Students Return from Field Work
Every year, students who have just finished their second year of the Bachelor’s in Urban Planning of the Faculty of Urban and Regional Development (FURD) at HSE University undertake field work in various Russian regions. They get to know more about cities in detail, learn to identify what’s typical and unique about them, and apply primary data collection methods. This July, the students’ field studies took place in cities in the Urals.
From Hate-Watching to GMOs: Highlights of the HSE Science Battles’ Third Semi-Finals
The fifth season of HSE Science Battles is currently underway, with the Sber office serving as a venue for another stage of the battle. Four speakers fought for a place in the finals by presenting their research in a ‘TED Talks’ format.
