Winners of Student Research Paper Competition 2024 Receive Awards
On February 10, the award ceremony for the winners and laureates of the 2024 Student Research Paper Competition took place at HSE University. Out of the 1,916 students to submit projects to the competition, 320 participants became winners and laureates and were awarded in four categories: social sciences, economics and management sciences, exact sciences, humanities and creative industries.
A Jumping-Off Point
HSE University First Vice Rector Vadim Radaev congratulated the winners and laureates in the Social Sciences category. He praised the audience for starting to do research as students, and noted: ‘You did the right thing—it's better not to postpone a good deed.’ Vadim Radaev recalled that the competition was first held in 2003 in five areas; now there are 25 of them, and the participants include students not only from HSE, but also other Russian universities.
Mikhail Mironyuk, First Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, called winning the competition an achievement and a jumping-off point for further studies and careers in graduate and doctoral programmes, laboratories and scientific institutes.
Alexander Larichev, Deputy Dean for Research at the Faculty of Law, said that the competition included research in various areas of jurisprudence, as well as interdisciplinary research.
The Ability to Convince
Sergey Roshchin, HSE University Vice Rector, spoke as part of the Economics and Management Sciences category. He noted that winning the competition is as important a result as getting a university degree. Sergey Pekarski, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, said that the competencies demonstrated by the winners and laureates of the competition are always in demand in various fields. One of these competencies is the ability to convince: the participants managed to convince experts that their work was the best.
According to Igor Tsarkov, Deputy Director of the HSE Graduate School of Business, despite the importance of applied work in the field of management, ‘there is nothing more practical than some good theory,’ and many works submitted to the competition were implemented according to research traditions. Irina Sizova, Associate Professor at the St Petersburg School of Economics and Management, noted that the students demonstrated the ability not only to work with data, but also to collect it.
Igor Kovalev, First Deputy Dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs, recalled that the participants of the competition had achieved success with the support of their academic supervisors, and advised the participants not to lose touch with them.
The Mind’s Triumph
Opening the Humanities and Creative Industries category, Ivan Gruzdev, Director for Internal Monitoring and Student Academic Development, called the award ceremony ‘the moment of the mind’s triumph’ because the audience comprised the smartest students. Felix Azhimov, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, stated that while engineering and natural sciences have become priority fields all over the world, humanities are still in great demand.
Ernest Matskyavichyus, Director of the Institute of Media at the Faculty of Creative Industries, added that the students conduct research, demonstrating a new perspective characterised by less prejudice, but more courage and drive. Renata Goroshkova, Deputy Dean for Research at the St Petersburg School of Arts and Humanities, said that the winners and laureates of the competition are on the right track—one which is not always easy, but extremely interesting.
Feedback and Recognition
As part of the Exact Sciences category, HSE University Vice Rector Elena Odoevskaya asked the students about their impressions of the competition. In her opinion, it’s important to keep each winner and laureate of the competition in the scientific field.
Vitaly Kotov, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, stressed that HSE holds various scientific competitions for students, and that while research is evaluated anonymously at the Student Research Paper Competition, participants of another competition organised by the Faculty of Chemistry first present their work on stands, and then make flash presentations.
