What is required of modern sports managers and how do digital technologies influence its development? These issues were discussed by participants at the international conference ‘Sport and the Future’ organized by HSE, International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), FIFA Master Alumni Association (FMA), and the Football Union of Russia (FUR).

On June 9–15, the town of Pushkin near St. Petersburg, Russia hosted the Sixth International Summer School on Multidisciplinary Higher Education Research organized by the HSE Institute of Education (IOE). Bringing together a premier cohort of accomplished international academics and bright early-career scholars, the 2018 School aimed to explore new and deeper perspectives on how higher education can contribute to positive socio-economic change at all levels.   

For the first time ever, Forbes (Russia) has published its own ranking of the best universities in Russia. One of the main objectives of the ranking was to determine which universities produce talented young entrepreneurs, including those capable of making it onto Forbes’ main ranking in the future or becoming part of Russia’s political elite. HSE placed 10^th in the ranking.

HSE University in St. Petersburg and University of Turin have signed an agreement for a new Double Degree PhD programme in History. The programme creates unique opportunities for developing necessary research competencies. The academic agenda is recognized internationally. The programme will open for applications in July 2018.

In May, Lucia Bombieri, a PhD student and intern researcher at the HSE International Scientific-Educational Laboratory for Socio-Cultural Research, delivered a report entitled ‘Instructions and Empathy: Teachers’ Role in Changing Intercultural Relations in School Settings’. Her report presented the preliminary results of a quasi-experiment undertaken in Italy and Russia with the aim of investigating teachers’ role in changing children’s responses towards migrant peers in a socio-cultural and cross-cultural perspective. Participants included teachers and students in the final year of primary school from different cities and regions in northern Italy and the Moscow region.

In 2018, a new specialization  ‘Jewelry Art and Object Design in Fashion’ opens up for Bachelor students at HSE’s Art and Design School. It will provide broad training for jewelers, managers and even brand managers. This profile has evolved from an elective. Students of the discipline are already working on their own jewelery brands. Head of the programme ‘Fashion’, Anzor Kankulov, and jeweler and curator of HSE’s Art and Design School, Slava Fomin, told HSE News Service what the new profile will teach and how.

In June, an extraordinary Academic Council session, which attracted a broader range or HSE staff and students, discussed the key areas of the university’s development. The ideas expressed, as well as suggestions from faculties and campuses, will provide the basis for a new HSE development programme, which will be discussed at the university staff conference in autumn.

The Centre stems from the International Neurolinguistics Laboratory and brings together researchers in clinical linguistics, special needs education, psycholinguistics, bilingualism, child speech, and gerontolinguistics. The Centre’s academic supervisor is Roelien Bastiaanse, Professor from the University of Groningen (the Netherlands), a researcher into clinical linguistics and founder of EMCL and IDEALAB, unique international educational programmes.
