Russian society demonstrates a growing interest in Asia and North Africa, with economic, social, political and cultural expectations associated with the macro-region. What is more, demand for educational programmes and competencies related to Asian and African studies is projected to grow in Russian universities. HSE Vice Rector Sergey Roshchin and the heads of relevant HSE departments explain the university’s past and current efforts to respond to these challenges.

Japanese Theatre, Dance and Calligraphy at Oriental Crazy Day 2022
Oriental Crazy Day is a traditional festival of the School of Asian Studies, which has been held at HSE University for eight years. This time, Asian Studies students taught guests Chinese calligraphy, Arabic script, Yemeni dancing and origami. They were also introduced to kabuki theatre and traditional Japanese drums.

HSE University Researchers Learned to Measure People’s Attachment to Home
A group of HSE University researchers (Sofya Nartova-Bochaver, Sofya Reznichenko, Milana Hachaturova and Victoria Erofeeva) and their international colleagues validated the Short Home Attachment Scale (SHAS), a useful tool in cross-cultural research. The SHAS makes it possible to study the level of home attachment in different countries and its influence on individuals’ well-being.

Alexey Masyutin is Russia’s first research doctorate in computer science, having earned his PhD in Computer Science from HSE University in 2018. He currently heads the HSE AI Centre and oversees the joint master’s programme between HSE University and Sber. A City in Your Mind: HSE Urbanists on Perceptions of Place and Imagined Neighbourhoods
Associate Professor Kirill Puzanov of the HSE Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism and HSE University Professor Oleg Baevskiy have held lectures at the Red Square Book festival. They talked about perceptions of the city, its private and public aspects, chamber and representative spaces, and imaginary (or ‘vernacular’) areas. The open lectures took place as part of the HSE University Open to the City project.

HSE's Faculty of Computer Science and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology have held the Mathematics of Machine Learning Olympiad for the fifth time. The participants competed for prizes and the opportunity to matriculate at two universities without exams by enrolling in the HSE and Skoltech joint master's programme in Math of Machine Learning.

HSE University Launches Study at GES-2 Cultural Centre
The MendiT Research Lab, based at the HSE University Doctoral School of Arts and Design, will become a resident of the GES-2 Cultural Centre for a month from June 5th. The researchers will introduce members of the urban community to the lab and explore the practices of mending clothes together with them. Some of the lab participants told the HSE News Service what it's like to be searching for a method and object of research.
