Community news at HSE University

Sheripher Dinala, from Malawi, is a student of the Master’s in Political Analysis and Public Policy at HSE University in Moscow. With her busy summer over and the new academic year in full swing, Sheripher shares her stories of moving into a university dormitory, volunteering at international conferences, and nighttime dancing by the Moscow River.

The accessibility of digital services for all users is a widely discussed topic both in society and at educational institutions across the country. Ensuring equal accessibility of digital services for people with disabilities is a task for every university, and Russian society is purposefully moving towards ensuring equal access to digital services for all. The Unit for Strategic Digital Development and Partnerships of HSE University’s Digital Office is also engaged in these tasks.

Thu Trang Pham is a 23-year old HSE University student from Vietnam. She is currently in her fourth year of studies at theFaculty of World Economy and International Relations. Thu Trang spoke to the HSE News Service about why HSE is the perfect university for international students, life in her dormitory, and how she plans to make the most of her final year of studies by travelling around Moscow and Russia.

The summer break is an opportunity for hard-working HSE University students to relax, recuperate, explore the city and travel. Two such students, Daniel Suarez from Colombia and Oluwafunto Abimbola from Nigeria, share their experiences of the positives (and pitfalls) of summer in the city and life at HSE dormitories.

Ayomide Adedini, from Nigeria, is a second-year student of the Master's in Political Analysis and Public Policy.He is also the current Chair of the Council of the International Student Association (CISA) and Vice Chair of Dormitory 7. In his interview, Ayomide talks about broadening his horizons in HSE University’s student dorms and making the most of summer in Moscow.

Vladimir Averin is a fourth-year student at HSE ICEF. He was named the overall winner of the Econometrics Universiade 2023, an annual competition organised by Moscow State University, having come second in the competition last year. In 2023, Vladimir will start his PhD studies at Yale University (USA). In his interview, he talks about the benefits of studying at HSE University, why econometrics requires creativity, and how to win a scholarship from the Yale University Department of Statistics and Data Science.

Oleg Baranov is a graduate of Moscow State University, the New Economic School, and the University of Maryland. He also lectured and ran a popular course on market design at the University of Colorado. He recently passed review for a tenured position at HSE University, and served as the Head of the International Recruiting Committee at the Faculty of Economic Sciences in the 2022–2023 academic year. He will also begin teaching the course ‘Microeconomics 2’ on the HSE and NES Joint Programme in Economics in September 2023. In his interview, Oleg talks about auctions, studying for a PhD, and international recruiting.

Mariya Teteryatnikova, Associate Professor at the Department of Theoretical Economics at the Faculty of Economic Sciences (FES), talks about building an academic career in economics, European students and teaching in Vienna, the role of network theory in different contexts, international recruiting and more.
