For the second year in a row, five HSE University master’s programmes have appeared in the QS Business Masters ranking. Moreover, the programmes in International Business and Financial Economics have improved their positions in the Top 100 of the ranking.

In the management ranking, the programme in International Business (by the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs) rose 22 places, ranking 71st among 155 programmes from universities across the globe. The ICEF Financial Economics programme rose to 85th place out of 179 finance programmes.

HSE’s programme in Strategic Management in Logistics and Supply Chain Management in the Digital Economy (by the Graduate School of Business) came 42nd among supply chain management programmes. In marketing and business analytics programmes, the HSE master’s programmes in Marketing: Digital Technologies and Marketing Communications and Business Analytics and Big Data Systems (both by the Graduate School of Business) took 76th and 101+ positions.

For us, rising 22 places in the prestigious Top 100 of the global QS ranking in management indicates that the Master of International Business programme, its syllabus and practice-focused format not only meet the requirements of today, but in some ways, are ahead of their time. I believe that the key factor behind the success of the programme—and most importantly, of its graduates—is our outstanding team consisting of top executives from global companies and world-level experts who teach on most of the courses. They are the crowning jewel of the programme, and they create a classroom atmosphere that resembles the reality of international business. They are heroes to our students.

It is particularly satisfying to achieve these results in the year our programme celebrates its anniversary. In 2022, the Master of International Business programme will be ten years old. Over those years, the programme has trained many successful leaders of international companies, who are now returning as professionals to teach on the programme.

The unique combination of theoretical and applied courses in economics and finance provides our graduates with outstanding opportunities for employment and further professional development in financial institutions, real-sector companies, internet start-ups and public service.

The programme in Strategic Management of Logistics and Supply Chains in the Digital Economy trains top executives in logistics and supply chain management (SCM) to solve a range of strategic tasks in the contemporary competitive market, including profit and loss management, and adjusting supply chain flexibility and dynamics in line with customers’ requirements. Issues such as supply chain adjustment to competition pressure, adapting to market volatility, the lack of professionals in innovative logistics/SCM, and increasing the sustainability of supply chains are only the tip of the iceberg. There are actually numerous other factors that impact the success of SCM, and their significance is growing. Our programme prepares leaders to solve complicated tasks in the digital economy, defining key competencies in terms of ideal order delivery, decreasing total costs and ensuring the systemic sustainability of supply chains. The programme is focused on creative ideas and new digital technologies such as big data, cloud services, IoT, artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, virtual and augmented reality, RFID, mobile apps and 3D printing. Graduates of the programme have a wide range of competencies in digital SCM and logistics, which makes them sought-after in all fields of business.

HSE University’s programme in Marketing Communications and Advertising in Contemporary Business appeared in the prestigious QS ranking several times. It is now part of the unified master’s programme in Marketing: Digital Technology and Marketing Communications, and my colleagues and I will do everything we can to ensure that the new programme is a worthy successor to this tradition. We are planning to actively involve students in research and project activities, develop international links, and continue strengthening relations with business partners that rely on our graduates, as well as promote students’ social responsibility and their understanding of how marketing and new technologies help make the world a better place.

The ranking of our master’s programme among the best in the world is an acknowledgement of its success in the highly competitive educational market in a time of COVID restrictions and economic problems.

The recent rebranding of the programme (which was previously called ‘Big Data Systems’) will help set the right priorities in terms of the focus of our teaching and our graduates’ career opportunities as professionals capable of managing an organization’s digital transformation, properly using information technology in business and management, managing data, and turning ‘big data’ into ‘big money’.

The ranking of master’s programmes in business, particularly in management, marketing, finance and business analytics has been published for the fifth time, while the first ranking for supply chain management was published in 2020. The methodology behind the ranking of master’s programmes is considerably different from the QS institutional ranking and ranking by subject, although it is mainly based on the same data. The ranking is built on five indicators, each of which is evaluated on a scale of 1 to 100: alumni outcomes, class & faculty diversity, employability, thought leadership, and return on investment. The indicators are calculated using data from universities, employer surveys, academic expert surveys, Scopus, top executive lists (Forbes and 150+ similar lists), and the Mercer Cost of Living City Index.
