Tajrin Rahman Tisha, 25, from Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh, is completing her Preparatory Year Programme. She is a graduate of the Development Studies bachelor’s programme at the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) and in September 2024 she will pursue her master's studies in Politics, Economics, Philosophy at the HSE University Faculty of Social Sciences. Tajrin Rahman Tisha shares her impressions and experience of living in Moscow, her future plans, the activities of the recently opened HSE Bangladesh Club, and the challenges she faces while studying Russian language.

Student Life in Moscow

Upon arriving in Moscow at the end of September 2023, I encountered challenges with the language and adapting to the cold weather. Throughout the winter, I had early morning classes starting at 9:30, which was difficult for me as I come from a hot climate. However, my current schedule allows for later classes at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m.

Despite the initial struggles, I have found HSE University to be a great place with supportive teachers

The only drawback is that the dormitories are located far from the university.

I have been actively trying to improve my Russian language skills by talking with locals in shops and on the streets, which has turned out to be quite beneficial for my language proficiency.

Communication in Russian made me appreciate the importance of language in fostering connections, especially with older people who may not speak English

I have explored iconic landmarks in Moscow such as the Kremlin, Red Square, Pushkin Museum, and have attended live concerts at VDNH. I have also indulged in the popular Russian drink, Raf coffee, which I now really enjoy. I currently reside in dormitory 10 near metro Okskaya and have been cooking traditional Bengali cuisine with the spices I brought with me. Despite the fact that I have not yet tried Russian food, I am open to exploring the local cuisine.

My Academic Journey

Stepping into the realm of academia with unwavering determination, I made the decision to pursue a master's degree in Politics, Economics, Philosophy at HSE University Faculty of Social Sciences in Moscow, Russia. My journey started with obtaining the Russian Government Scholarship, a symbol of opportunity and enlightenment that beckoned me towards higher education.

To be considered for the Russian Government Scholarship, I needed to submit a portfolio and have an interview at the Russian Embassy. Students can choose from up to six universities.

HSE University was my first choice

Based on my interview performance and portfolio, I received the scholarship and was admitted to this highly reputed international university.

The Russian House in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has been a bastion of support and guidance, facilitating the scholarship process with meticulous care and organising heartfelt farewells before students embark on their flight to Russia.

The ties between Russia and Bangladesh run deep, rooted in moments of solidarity and assistance that have shaped our shared history

Delving deeply into my research about HSE University before embarking on my educational sojourn, I found myself captivated by the academic excellence and vibrant student community that awaited me.

Enveloped in the captivating allure of Moscow's rich history and dynamic energy, my journey at HSE University unfolds as a symphony of growth, discovery, and cultural exchange.

Navigating the complexities of studying abroad, I find solace in the warmth of friendships forged with both international and Russian students, fostering a sense of belonging and unity within the vibrant tapestry of campus life

I cannot forget to mention that this incredible journey would not have been possible without the support and guidance of my buddy Lisa Filippova, who helped me navigate the intricacies of e-commerce websites, shops, restaurants, salons, and more in Moscow. Amazing teachers of the preparatory year programme helped me to expand my knowledge and understanding of the Russian language at a B1 level, allowing me to communicate effectively with native speakers and immerse myself in the rich cultural tapestry of this vibrant nation.

My Research Interests

I feel excited to delve into researching political regimes and conflicts among countries. I aim to achieve my goal of addressing pressing issues such as poverty, inequality, education, healthcare, and human rights violations through policy advocacy within United Nations programmes. I plan to work with key stakeholders to influence decision-making processes and ensure that policies and programmes effectively address the needs of marginalized groups.

By advocating for effective policies, I hope to create positive change and make a real difference in the lives of those in need, ultimately working towards building a more inclusive and sustainable world

My commitment to using my passion for advocacy and social justice, to contribute to the important work of the United Nations, highlights my dedication to making a meaningful impact on individuals and communities globally.

HSE University Bangladesh Club

As the president of the HSE Bangladesh Club, I am thrilled to mention that in April 2024 we organised an exciting event at the cultural café to showcase traditional cuisine, poems and songs in the sweetest Bengali languages, traditional dances, and the 1971 war story symbolising Bangladesh's victory as the first nation to sacrifice blood for the language. This event served as a celebration of our heritage and a platform for cultural exchange and understanding.

I am enthusiastic about creating exciting programmes and fostering cultural exchange within the club

As chair of the Bangladesh club, I am engaged in organising regular events and participate in the Unity Festival with other countries. Our club currently has around 20 members, and we have plans to organise a number of various activities.

‘I See that Senior Students and HSE University Staff Are the Kind of People You Can Rely on’

How do I find my way between numerous HSE campuses? How will I survive if I don’t speak any Russian? What is a polite way of addressing my professors? These are only a few of the questions international students have when they come to study at HSE University. At the beginning of the new academic year, HSE University is running a series of Orientation Sessions for new international students to address these questions and help them settle into their life in Moscow.
