Bolivian Student Makes Most of Time in Moscow while Preparing for International Career

Jazmin Quevedo Cascante, a native of Bolivia, graduated this year from HSE Preparatory Year Programme and is currently pursuing her Master’s in the Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation. She came to HSE with plans to eventually work in an international environment where she can have a positive impact on society.

‘I chose this course because I thought it was not only very interesting but also because I see that there are opportunities and future potential from a global perspective’, Jazmin said. ‘My Master’s programme is very specific and handles a topic which is very trendy globally and has a huge impact on the economic growth and development of a country’.

In addition to her studies, Jazmin is also working to make the most of her experience by gaining as much exposure to Russian culture as possible.

‘Getting out of my comfort zone was a challenge and I was happy to make it. Living in Moscow has been a good experience, I have learned a lot about Russian culture and have gotten to know myself a bit more’, she said. ‘As a foreign student, I can say that it is not always easy living and studying in a new country. Sometimes it can be really hard, but overall I can say that things have been positive thanks to the students and friends (Russian and international) who have been very helpful and nice’.

‘The parks are my favourite’, Jazmin said when asked about what she enjoys most in Moscow. ‘They are so big, beautiful, well taken care of and are good places to relax or go for a walk with friends. In some parks, you can ice skate in winter and in summer there are plenty of activities that are interesting to see and participate in, such as dancing or concerts. As for museums, Moscow has a lot! If you have a student ID, you have a special price for being a student and you can appreciate Russian culture more. You can go by yourself, or I would recommend maybe going with a Russian friend to get more insight and understanding’.

Despite having grown fond of Russian culture, Jazmin enjoys the sizeable Latin American community in Moscow, which is always willing to help and give advice. And when she feels homesick, Latin restaurants and clubs are never far away.

Jazmin, who cites her father as the main source of inspiration in her life, has several words of advice for foreign students considering study at HSE.

‘First, learn a little more about Russian culture because it is important to know what to expect to be able to handle the cultural shock’, she said. ‘Second, ask advice from foreign students who have or are studying at HSE and at the course you are looking to join. Third, ask as many questions as possible and get all the information because being informed of things, whether you agree with them or not, is very important’.
