Onoja Abah Monday, 28, from Lagos, Nigeria, is currently pursuing his master's degree in the Science of Learning and Assessment (SOLA) programme at the HSE Institute of Education. He spoke to the HSE News Service about why he chose HSE University, his fascination with Russian language and culture, and his future plans to contribute to the development of his home country.

My Path to HSE University

I was drawn to HSE University because of its stellar reputation as one of the top three universities in Russia and its impressive global ranking. While researching my preferred course, the Science of Learning and Assessment programme, I discovered HSE's exceptional expertise in this field.

My fascination with global affairs has given me a deep understanding of Russia, its people, and culture. I've always been captivated by the country's rich heritage and history

When the opportunity arose to study here, I seized it, and I'm thrilled to be a part of the HSE community.

I'm grateful to have been awarded the Open Doors Scholarship, which enabled me to pursue my studies at HSE University.

The examination process was straightforward, and the admission process was remarkably open and transparent

Throughout the process, the HSE representatives were incredibly supportive and were always available to provide guidance and answer my questions. Their assistance made a significant difference in my transition to studying at HSE University.

The Study Process

Throughout my studies, I've had the opportunity to take a variety of fascinating courses, including Psychology, Machine Learning, and Python Programming. These courses have been particularly engaging, as they've allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of complex concepts.

The professors have been exceptional, providing expert guidance and support throughout the learning process

The classes have been highly interactive, striking the perfect balance between education and enjoyment. Overall, my academic experience at HSE has been truly enriching.

Student Life and Community

I've been fortunate to establish strong relationships with my fellow students. We regularly engage in discussions outside of class, exploring topics in more depth and sharing our perspectives. We also make it a point to socialise, often meeting for coffee on weekends. These interactions have not only enriched my academic experience but also provided a sense of community and belonging here at HSE.

I was fortunate to have a buddy named Nastya, who was incredibly helpful during my transition to life in Moscow. She assisted me with registrations, showed me around the city, and introduced me to various cultural attractions, such as museums. She even helped me navigate everyday tasks, like finding grocery stores. Nastya's support and friendship made a significant difference in my adjustment to life here.

I reside in HSE Dormitory 7, which has exceeded my expectations. The facilities are modern, clean, and well-maintained. One of the amenities I appreciate the most is the on-site gym, which allows me to stay active and healthy.

Overall, the dormitory provides a comfortable and convenient living environment, making it an ideal place for me to focus on my studies

Future Plans

My ultimate goal is to pursue a PhD and acquire advanced knowledge and skills. After completing my studies, I plan to return to Nigeria and contribute to the development of my country.

I aspire to make a meaningful impact in education and beyond, leveraging the expertise and experience I gain during my time at HSE University

I'm diligently working to improve my Russian language skills, and I'm pleased to see progress every day. Despite the challenges, I've grown to love the language and appreciate its nuances. The experience of learning Russian has been rewarding, and I'm excited to continue my language journey.

Although I'm enjoying my time in Russia, I make it a point to stay in regular contact with my friends and relatives back home in Nigeria

I miss them dearly, and our conversations help bridge the distance. I also miss the familiar weather of my homeland, but I'm adapting to the Russian climate. Despite the physical distance, I feel connected to my loved ones and my root.

Free Time and Hobbies

In my free time, I enjoy a variety of activities. Staying active is important to me, so I regularly visit the gym. I also appreciate taking walks and exploring the city.

Additionally, I'm a curious person, so I enjoy watching documentaries and learning about new topics. Visiting museums is another one of my hobbies, as I find them to be great resources for learning about history and culture. Lastly, I value my relationships and make it a point to regularly visit with friends.
