HSE Launches First Online Courses on Russia’s National Open Education Platform

Starting today, students from around the world will be able to register for classes taught in Russian by renowned teachers from the Higher School of Economics on Russia's National Open Education Platform. All lectures meet the regulatory requirements set for educational disciplines in Russia.

Yesterday, September 1, students gained access to the first online courses of the Higher School of Economics – General Sociology, Demography, Organizational Theory, and Organizational Behaviour. It is planned that by May 2016, the Russian National Open Education Platform will offer at least 10 HSE courses (all courses will be taught in Russian).

The online classes, which aside from the Higher School of Economics are offered by another seven of Russia’s top universities, allow any student to take part in educational programmes carried out by some of the country’s best schools.

According to HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov, the quality of education in Russia will grow thanks to the fact that any student from any Russian university will be able to take courses at top Russian universities wherever and whenever they choose.

In addition, Vasily Tretyakov, the chairman of the National Open Education Platform, believes that this is just one of several projects aimed at uniting universities as they strive to achieve a common goal.

The Higher School of Economics has been developing online courses for several years and was one of the first Russian universities to participate in the international Coursera project, which allows any internet user to take classes online for free. There are already over 20 courses on Coursera offered by HSE instructors.

The National Open Education Platform will give an official presentation on September 14 during EdCrunch, the second international conference on educational technologies.

Understanding Russian Communication: Online and in Private

How Russians think bears little resemblance to Germans’ attention to detail or American cheerfulness. The difference can be explained, at least in part, by looking at linguistic peculiarities. A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) launched by HSE called ‘Understanding Russians: Contexts of Intercultural Communication’ investigates cases when basic Russian cultural values show up through linguistic choices, which may influence the way people act. The nine-week course was first offered in 2014 and was tremendously successful. It will run for the second time starting October 12, 2015. Mira Bergelson, professor in the Faculty of Humanities at HSE and the author of the course, shared the core principles of making contact with people who don’t smile on the street but who may become your best friends after just a few meetings.
